Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL QUESTIONS

I am new to yoga, where do I start?

This is the most common question we hear. We are excited that you are taking the first step towards a yoga practice and we look forward to guiding you. Please feel free to drop in the studio anytime between the hours of 10am-5pm M-F or call us at 256.702.3022 to learn more. If you do not have a recent injury or chronic condition, please show up 15 minutes prior to a beginner or rest and restore class and we will set you up. If you do have a recent injury or condition that restricts movement, it may be best to begin with one-on-one sessions. You can contact us here to inquire.

What is yoga?

Yoga was developed up to 5,000 years ago in India as a comprehensive system for wellbeing on all levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. While Yoga is often equated with Hatha Yoga, the well-known system of postures and breathing techniques, Hatha Yoga is only a part of the overall discipline of Yoga. Today, many millions of people use various aspects of Yoga to help raise their quality of life in such diverse areas as fitness, stress relief, wellness, vitality, mental clarity, healing, peace of mind and spiritual growth.

Yoga is a system, not of beliefs, but of techniques and guidance for enriched living. As in any field, some aspects of Yoga are too subtle to be learned from books or lectures; they must be acquired through experience. Hence Yoga’s time-honored emphasis on the student-teacher relationship, in which the teacher helps the student develop a practice that brings deeper understanding through personal experience.

Since the individual experience of Yoga is quite personal and may differ for each practitioner, there are a wide variety of approaches to its practice. Yoga has, in recent times, branched out in many new directions, some of which are quite different from its traditional emphases. All approaches to Yoga, however, are intended to promote some aspect(s) of wellbeing. At Shoals Yoga, we strive to offer you the most authentic teachings of Yoga that have been so graciously shared with us by our teachers. We strive to practice Yoga on and off the mat so that we can better serve you, our families, and our community. Our group classes focus mainly on four parts of Yoga; postures (asana), breath work (pranayama), meditation (dhyana), and relaxation (savasana). We dive deeper into other aspects of the practice in our workshops, retreats, and teacher trainings.

What do I need to bring to class?

We have everything you need. Please wear comfortable clothing.

Do you offer private or semi-private classes?

Yes. We love working with individuals and small groups. Please contact us to schedule your session.

What are the benefits of yoga?

Research shows that yoga is a great practice for improving your overall health. Increasing flexibility is one of the most obvious benefits of a frequent yoga practice. But don't worry, you don't have to be able to touch your toes to do yoga. Yoga meets you where you are. And strong muscles do more than look good, they prevent back pain and help with arthritis. When we are stressed, our body secretes cortisol. In excess, cortisol is linked to depression and decreased immunity, meaning we might get sick more often. Yoga lowers cortisol levels, therefore increasing immunity and decreasing risk of depression and sickness. As a wise friend once told us, "Life is better with yoga."
